An important compost technique project aimed at changing waste management procedures is under way in the beautiful city of Tripoli, Greece. Driven by the EU Cohesion Policy, the EU Green Policy, and the Just Transition Fund, this initiative by Startup Greece aims to implement an innovative composting system. In addition to being compatible with the principles of a circular economy, this project seeks to advance sustainable agriculture.

Tripoli is currently facing waste management difficulties, as shown by waste that is not properly recycled and separated. Concerns about the environment increase with the improper disposal of all solid waste in the surrounding landfills. The 2015 crisis, which was started by the suspension of waste transportation to landfills in Athens, points out the urgency with which Tripoli must reconsider its waste management strategies.

The initiative that develops composting emphasizes the use of distinct containers for organic waste. With this targeted action, organic waste will be kept out of landfills and converted into useful compost. By reducing the load on landfills, this innovation generates an additional source of compost, which will be beneficial. The active participation of Tripoli's schools is crucial to the initiative's success since schools have a pivotal role in engaging pupils with the categorization of waste.

As a result, local farmers will receive compost, a nutrient-rich soil amendment that promotes environmentally friendly agricultural practices. This circular economy model increases local food production and agricultural productivity while reducing dependence on landfills. Composting improves the quality of the soil, boosts crop yields, and promotes greater local food sustainability.

Startup Greece will track key indicators in order to assess the project's success. This includes a thorough check on the monthly tonnage of compost to measure the total amount of organic waste that remains out of landfills. Regular survey questionnaires given to students will also evaluate their knowledge as well as their active engagement at the same time. Surveys conducted on nearby farmers who use the compost technique will also provide insights on the quantity, quality, and perceived effects on soil health and their harvest rates.

The composting initiative in Tripoli represents an important advancement in the direction of a more ecologically friendly and sustainable future. This project could transform waste management procedures and advance sustainable agriculture by embracing innovative methods and encouraging community involvement. It is a great example of an area implementing innovative measures to manage waste while helping the local economy and environment at the same time.

In the heart of Arkadia, the city of Tripolis is setting a precedent for environmental stewardship through its pioneering composting initiatives. As part of the broader Circular Economy Project, Tripolis has embraced composting as a key strategy in promoting sustainability and enhancing community cohesion. This move not only showcases the city's commitment to green practices but also serves as an inspiring model for other regions looking to implement similar environmental solutions.

The project kicked off with the introduction of compost bins in local schools and the installation of a home compost smart bin, revolutionizing the way residents think about and manage waste. By turning organic waste into nutrient-rich compost, the initiative is drastically reducing landfill use, cutting down on pollution, and improving soil health. This cycle of waste-to-resource not only benefits the environment but also bolsters local agriculture, providing farmers with high-quality compost for growing fresh produce.

Educational programs have been at the core of the initiative, with workshops and seminars aimed at teaching students and the community about the benefits of composting. These efforts have fostered a greater sense of environmental responsibility among the youth, ensuring the sustainability of the project for generations to come.

The success of Tripolis's composting project lies not just in its environmental benefits but also in its ability to bring the community together. By participating in composting activities, residents are contributing to a greener city and experiencing firsthand the impact of their collective actions. This shared sense of purpose has strengthened community bonds and set a powerful example of what can be achieved when a community unites for a sustainable future.

As Tripolis continues to lead by example, its composting initiative offers valuable lessons in environmental conservation, community engagement, and the tangible benefits of embracing a circular economy. This endeavor not only marks a significant step towards a more sustainable world but also highlights the power of local action in driving global change.

Becoming a true green leader in the hotel context requires a continuous commitment to sustainability and the ability to inspire others to follow this example. This article explores how hotel managers can adopt green leadership principles to guide their facilities towards more ecological and sustainable practices, inspired by the "Green Leadership for Hotel Managers" project supported by Erasmus+.

The Importance of Green Leadership

Green leadership goes beyond simple environmental management; it is an ethical approach that integrates sustainability into all business decisions. This concept is based on the idea that leaders must not only lead by example but also actively promote a culture of sustainability within their organization.

How to Become a Green Leader

  1. Education and Training: Managers should take advantage of opportunities offered by programs like Erasmus+ to educate themselves on sustainability. Courses, workshops, and educational materials specifically designed for leaders in the hospitality industry can provide the knowledge necessary to implement sustainable practices.

  2. Implementation of Sustainable Practices: Introduce eco-friendly initiatives such as waste reduction, recycling, the use of renewable energies, and water conservation. These actions demonstrate a practical commitment to sustainability.

  3. Effective Communication: A green leader must be able to effectively communicate the vision and sustainability goals to employees, customers, and stakeholders. This includes using all available channels, such as social media, newsletters, and direct meetings, to promote sustainable practices.

  4. Creating a Sustainability Network: Collaborate with other hotels, local and international organizations to share best practices and resources. Participation in networks like the one proposed by the Erasmus+ project can amplify the impact of green initiatives.

  5. Measurement and Evaluation: Implement systems to monitor the environmental impact of adopted practices. This not only helps to assess the effectiveness of initiatives but also to communicate tangible progress to stakeholders.

Benefits of Green Leadership

Adopting a green leadership approach offers numerous benefits, including:

  • Cost Reduction: Sustainable practices can lead to significant cost reductions, thanks to energy efficiency and waste reduction.
  • Improvement of Corporate Image: Being recognized as a sustainable hotel can improve reputation and attract customers who value sustainability.
  • Responding to Market Demands: With increasing environmental awareness, consumers demand more sustainable practices in the hospitality sector.
  • Social and Environmental Benefits: Beyond economic advantages, green leadership contributes to the conservation of natural resources and the well-being of local communities.

Conclusion

Green leadership represents an imperative for hotel managers who want to successfully lead their facilities towards a sustainable future. Through education, the implementation of sustainable practices, effective communication, network creation, and impact assessment, leaders can inspire positive change that benefits not only their company but also the environment and society as a whole. The "Green Leadership for Hotel Managers" project, supported by Erasmus+, provides a valuable opportunity for hotel managers to engage in this journey towards sustainability.

5 GREEK GREEN STARTUPS TO WATCH OUT IN 2023.

“Sustainable Startup Initiatives Today for a Better Tomorrow”

An article by Spyros Koliopoulos, Junior Analyst at Startup Greece.

To preserve our environment for future generations, we have no choice but to shift towards more sustainable practices. There are five Greek startups that have managed to thrive using an eco-friendly approach in their day-to-day operations. No matter their area of expertise, they all consider their ecological footprint before putting their ideas into action. This has given them a competitive edge over their counterparts and has simultaneously aided them to grow continuously and become key players in the startup market. To understand the size of the green startup market it is critical to consider that over $13 billion were invested in climate-tech startups in the first half of 2023.

Dataphoria is a startup focusing on the integration of technology and sustainability that was founded in 2021. They utilize data analytics to track the impact of current practices and at the same time provide solutions for limiting emissions. They consult various firms from different industries guiding them towards ESG strategies while also providing dynamic performance monitoring with real-time sustainability dashboards. Furthermore, Dataphoria also conducts a carbon footprint analysis followed by a product life cycle assessment.

This helps firms adjust their products, which will prolong their presence in the market. The incorporation of green infographics allows clients to visualize their sustainability achievements and gives them a sense of what they have been doing well and what they can work towards improving. The sustainable evolution of products over time is the ultimate goal that the startup works around. By providing both general and specific data, it aims to provide its clients with a well-rounded understanding of where their product stands both on a local and global scale.

EV Loader is a charging management application focusing on electric vehicles since 2018. The main function of the app is to promote grid flexibility and incentivize users to charge their cars during time intervals when there is low demand in the energy grid. During periods when the renewable energy grid experiences shortages, the app will hint its users not to charge through its pricing mechanism since the price per kW will be more expensive. Undoubtedly, the app is a win-win situation both for charging station owners and EV drivers.

On the one hand, owners can list their stations and enjoy more charges per day than before which translates into more revenue. On the other hand, drivers can enjoy easy access to stations by clicking on the map feature and will be able to check price fluctuations. Moreover, the usage of blockchain technology for data exchanges and the control of the station, user, and car simultaneously has proven critical in its success. At the same time, the utilization of predictive models that forecast station occupancy makes the app user-friendly as it ensures that clients get served quickly and effectively. EV Loader also provides charging management software to companies that can utilize it to operate efficiently by developing a strategy around it. Just recently, the startup also introduced an e-shop with EV chargers that are compatible with their software and can be purchased for personal use. More specifically, the startup closely collaborates with EDGE experts who work with clients to ensure that buildings possess eco-friendly mechanisms that increase their sustainability performance. Coffeeco was founded in 2022. The startup focuses on transforming the espresso supply chain from linear to circular. To do so, they collect coffee waste and use it to maximize resources that yield infinite financial returns. As a result, the team reduces waste disposal costs for firms and simultaneously promotes sustainable product development. Noticeably enough, two cups of coffee are consumed on a daily average per capita. This translates into waste amounting to 50 grams and 93.5 grams of CO2 emissions daily.

Coffeeco uses biomass to create sustainable raw materials for the cosmetics and food industries. To be exact, they have developed a unique upcycle ecosystem through which they conduct large coffee ground orders, then transform the beans into sustainable ingredients and sell them to their client base. Their business model contains three areas of innovation. First, they have established a protected technology for ingredient production. Second, the exclusive contracts signed with suppliers allow them to control the supply and competition. Lastly, exclusive partnerships give them the chance to upcycle 100% of collected waste without any volume limits. In its effort to create a long-lasting environmental impact, Coffeeco aims to achieve a 50% increase per year in total tons of waste upcycled.

Phee was founded in 2015. It relies on wasted seagrass in the Mediterranean coastline and creates eco-friendly products that are competitive in the market. By conducting rigorous R&D, they have brought dead leaves back to life and have been the first company globally able to utilize them as a primary raw material. In parallel, the team closely cooperates with industry leaders, consumers, and relevant authorities to promote sustainable materials with the hope that they will soon dominate the market.

Over the years, the team has been engaging with the upcycling of unexploited natural resources and has created innovative biocomposites that are a more sustainable and healthier solution in an effort to limit conventional material presence. The startup has recorded a considerable number of sales from iPhone, iPad, and Samsung cases, as well as its Oceania racket and sunglasses all made from wasted seagrass. In the near future, Phee aims to expand commercial use borders for innovative and well-established product categories based on their unique raw material.

Collision – one of the world's biggest tech events, according to BNN Bloomberg – has confirmed today that it will host the 2024 event in Toronto. The event will bring together thousands of next-generation entrepreneurs, investors, and journalists from around the world.

This year, Collision is expected to contribute CA$49 million to Toronto's economy, according to projections from Destination Toronto. Collision added CA$27 million to the city’s economy in 2019 and CA$43 million in 2022, resulting in a total economic impact of CA$188 million over three years.

In addition to the direct economic benefits, Collision provides an opportunity to showcase Canadian and Torontonian tech talent and companies to a global audience, while also positioning Toronto as a thriving and inclusive tech ecosystem in the long term. Google, Netflix, Reddit, Pinterest, Cloudflare and Snowflake have opened offices and engineering hubs in the region over the last four years, according to Toronto Global.

"We are delighted to be returning to Toronto in 2024. Despite the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic and economic uncertainties in the tech industry, Collision has continued to flourish in this city. We are grateful for the support from Destination Toronto and the City of Toronto as we aim to make Collision even more globally impactful and to shine a spotlight on the remarkable Canadian and Toronto tech ecosystem on our global stage," said Paddy Cosgrave, founder and CEO at Collision.

Collision 2023 will take place next week in Toronto, from June 26-29. It is projected to bring thousands of attendees – including major tech figures, such as godfather of AI Geoffrey Hinton, Conviction founder Sara Guo, AWS CEO Adam Selipsky and YouTube superstar Marques Brownlee – from more than 140 countries to the city.

More than 230 global partners – including Siemens, Volkswagen, AT&T, RBC, Google, AWS, Stripe and Salesforce – and thousands of startups will travel to Toronto next week from countries such as Nigeria, the Republic of Korea, Uruguay, Japan, Italy, Ghana and Pakistan, all taking to the event floor over three days.

Collision will also run programs and initiatives across the event that encourage a broad participation from communities in Canada, including thousands of students, members of Indigenous communities, and members of underrepresented groups in tech.

“I am so pleased that we will again welcome the Collision Conference to Toronto in 2024. This event puts our city on the global stage, showcasing our thriving technology community to industry leaders and major investors. It also significantly boosts our local economy: the 2022 conference generated $43 million in direct spending and $68 million in economic impact. I'm certain that this year's conference, running from June 26 to 29, will be even more impactful for Toronto and the surrounding region" said Councillor Shelley Carroll (Don Valley North), Chair of the Economic and Community Development Committee

“Collision puts the spotlight on Toronto as the fastest-growing tech centre in North America. The city cultivates a distinctive mix of culture, education, diversity and talent for technology and innovation sectors to thrive. Hosting major events and conferences in Toronto, like Collision, delivers significant economic impact to our local economy and contributes to its vibrancy and appeal to residents and visitors. We look forward to welcoming start-ups, investors, governments, organizations and visitors from around the world to Toronto," said Scott Beck, President & CEO, Destination Toronto

Canadian startups have experienced healthy VC activity despite the economic headwinds. According to PitchBook, for the first half of 2023, Canadian and Toronto startups surpassed 2019 and 2020 funding levels, beating pre-pandemic levels, with the value of deals in Toronto reaching US$1.3 billion. 2023 is up 120% compared to the first half of 2019 and 2020 (US$0.6 billion each year). Similarly, for Canadian startups, the deal value has increased by 40% from 2019 (563 deals at US$2.3 billion in Q1 and Q2) to 2023 (347 deals at US$3.2 billion).

About Collision

Financial Times says Collision is “a technology conference that applies an all-encompassing definition of tech”. Global News calls it the “Tech Olympics”; The Globe and Mail “one of North America’s biggest startup conferences”. Collision brings the next generation of global leaders reshaping the world to Toronto with thousands of attendees anticipated the Enercare Centre from June 20-23, 2022.
